1979 "American Architecture" U.S. Commemorative Stamp Panel SC#CP111

Produced by the Postal Commemorative Society, Scott catalog #CP111. Consists of a block of 4 commemorative stamps (these are SC#1782a, which is SC#s 1779-1782), a lithograph representation of the stamps' subject (this litho is by Walter Brooks), and a detailed description of the stamps and the work of art. The stamp block is mint, and is in a protective plastic folder, and mounted on the panel below the lithograph. The description is on the back of the panel. The full panel measures 10" x 13" and is a heavy, embossed, cream-colored stock.

Hafez lived in Shiraz from 1300 to 1389. His verses are well-known to all Iranians, and six centuries later still have value as aphorisms. His extraordinary popularity is due to his simple and frequently discursive language, rid of any affectation and to the use he makes of familiar images and of proverbial expressions. Iranians feel that his best poetry is the "Ghazal" engraved on his tomb. The Ghazal is a six to fifteen verse composition in which the verses are linked together by a unity of inspiration and of symbolism rather than by a logical sequence of ideas. Here are a few verses:

"Sit near my tomb, and bring wine and music
Feeling thy presence, I shall come out of my sepulchre
Rise, softly moving creature,
and let me contemplate thy beauty."

The Mihrab of Oljaitu, Jameh Mosque, Isfahan

Stucco - the carving, moulding and painting of plaster - reached the height of its development in Iran during the Mongol period. Often disparaged for not providing sufficient resistance to the designer, allowing the creation of light fantasies without thoughtful planning. Its practice in Iran suggests both great discipline and imagination. The execution of a design is often far from easy. A foundation layer of wet plaster blocks out the major forms, and as it begins to harden the main figures and motifs are carved. Several layers may be applied for a particularly deep design, and when the plaster finally hardens it is cut and polished until a sharp focus is reached. Iran's astonishingly fast recovery from the Mongol invasion resulted in this example from the reign of Oljaitu (1304-1316), where the interplay of superb calligraphy and intricately rendered blossoms, leaves and tendrils suggest both exuberance and exquisite control.

Shrine of Shah Nematallah Wali, Mahan

Shah Nematallah Wali spent many years is wandering through Central Asia perfecting his spiritual gifts before finally settling at Mahan, twenty miles southeast of Kerman, where he passed the last twenty-five years of his life. He died in 1431, having founded a Dervish order which continues to be an active spiritual force today. The central domed burial vault at Mahan, completed in 1437, was erected by Ahmad Shah Bahmani, king of the Deccan, and one of Shah Nematallah's most devoted disciples.

The strategies that have evolved in Iran to combat the rigors of the environment demonstrate a practical inventiveness that goes beyond the merely functional to provide both workable and beautiful solutions. The vents in this wind tower are arranged so as to catch the slightest cooling breath of wind, and carry it down to the chambers beneath. Although almost entirely replaced by electric air conditioning, those examples that still remain are possessed of a charm that speaks of the close relationship between form and function in classical Iranian architecture.

The frescoes and paintings which cover the walls of the main reception hall depict historical scenes, such as the reception of an Uzbek king in 1646 (when the palace had just been completed), a variety of battles (including a more recent depiction of Nader Shah's victory over the Indian army at Kamal) and similar, less anecdotal pictures in the traditional miniature style. Meticulous restoration of many of the works is underway.

Persian Topicals 7 Stamps Nursing, Archaeology, Architecture MNH Condition

These seven topical stamps were issued between 1965 and 1970 for various commemorative purposes. The first one was issued 5 August 1965 for the 60th Anniversary of the Constitution. There were two stamps issued 24 February 1966 for Nurses Day (believe it or not, there was a time when Iranian women could dress and act like professionals and these stamps prove it). The next two were issued 12 October 1966 for the Intraparliamentary Union Conference. The 13 April 1968 Iranian Archaeology Conference follows with an ancient sculpture, and finally the 14 September 1970 International Congress of Architects shows the intricate mosaic work that still decorates many buildings on the inside and outside.
