The Arts and Crafts Movement in America

The Arts and Crafts movement emerged during the late Victorian period in England, the most industrialized country in the world at that time. Anxieties about industrial life fueled a positive revaluation of handcraftsmanship and precapitalist forms of culture and society.

The British movement derived its philosophical underpinnings from two important sources: first, the designer A. W. N. Pugin (1812–1852), whose early writings promoting the Gothic Revival presaged English apprehension about industrialization, and second, theorist and art critic John Ruskin (1819–1900), who advocated medieval architecture as a model for honest craftsmanship and quality materials.

The American Arts and Crafts movement was inextricably linked to the British movement and closely aligned with the work of William Morris and the second generation of architect-designers, including Charles Robert Ashbee (1863–1942), who toured the United States, and Charles Francis Annesley Voysey (1857–1941), whose work was known through important publications such as The Studio.

Unlike in England, the undercurrent of socialism of the Arts and Crafts movement in the United States did not spread much beyond the formation of a few Utopian communities. Rose Valley was one of these artistic and social experiments.

In urban centers, socialist experiments were undertaken on a community level, frequently in the form of educating young women. Ideas of craftwork and simplicity manifested themselves in decorative work, including the metalwork and pottery of the Arts and Crafts movement.

In addition to pottery, women fashioned jewelry in the Arts and Crafts mode. Stones were chosen for their inherent artistic qualities, resulting in jewelry that promoted truth to materials

Frank Lloyd Wright (1867–1959) shaped a new way of living through his completely designed environments, encompassing architecture and all elements of interiors. He ushered in a style of architecture that became known as the Prairie School, characterized by low-pitched roofs, open interiors, and horizontal lines that reflected the prairie landscape.

The rise of urban centers and the inevitability of technology presaged the end of the Arts and Crafts movement. The search for nature and an idealist medieval era was no longer a valid approach to living. By the 1920s, machine-age modernity and the pursuit of a national identity had captured the attention of designers and consumers, bringing an end to the handcrafted nature of the Arts and Crafts movement in America.

THE 1715 FLEET DISASTER

Every year, two fleets traveled between Spain and the Americas; the Esquadron de Terra Firme from Spain to South America, and the Flota de Nova Espana toward Vera Cruz. Sometimes, these two fleets would travel together all the way to the Caribbean. The return voyage was more dangerous.

The Spanish 1715-Fleet disaster was probably the greatest to befall any of the Spanish treasure fleets in terms of casualties and money, with reports of a loss of 14 million pesos and as many as 1,000 or more lives. The modern salvage of this fleet, begun in the early 1960s and ongoing today has been the largest single source of gold cobs ever in the numismatic market, turning former rarities and unknown issues into collectible and popular commodities.

On July 31, 1715, seven days after departing from Havana, Cuba, all 11 ships of this 1715 treasure fleet were lost in a hurricane near present day Florida. The fleet was carrying silver and also known as the "1715 plata treasure fleet" or "1715 plate treasure fleet". Some artifacts and even coins still wash up on Florida beaches from time to time.

According to some reports, the French ship, which had sailed slightly farther to the east, escaped the storm. But in any case, all 11 Spanish ships were caught in the thick of it. Before the hurricane had passed, 10 of the 11 ships had sunk, most of them dashed against the reefs just offshore. The final ship managed to anchor safely, but sank the following day in another storm.

Over the next three years, the Spanish government sent numerous salvage vessels to recover what they could of the lost treasure; looters and pirates also flocked to the site. Conveniently, some of the ships had run aground or sunk in water so shallow that part of the hull was still visible above the waterline. By 1720, Spain gave up on any further salvage attempts, and the exact locations of the ships—which still contained many millions of dollars worth of treasure—were lost.

In 1928, the wreckage of one of the ships was discovered by a diver just 200 yards offshore. Then, in the 1960s, a contractor named Kip Wagner began to search for the other ships in earnest, and eventually succeeded in rediscovering several of them—and recovering a huge amount of gold and silver.

When I first saw the watch I was surprised at the size. It is slightly, but noticeably, smaller than a standard pocket watch. However it feels quite solid and hefty, has stood up well to daily use and the mechanical movement is mesmerizing.

The packaging is nothing special, but I know the person I gave the watch to has thoroughly enjoyed showing it off. In the end, even at retail the watch is a good deal for its solid level of quality.

I don't wear a wrist watch now that I'm retired, but, I do need to keep up with the time. I thought of a pocket watch, but that's just something else to have to keep up with. The S&W Carabineer Watch was the perfect choice. I have all my keys hooked to it so it stays in my pocket all the time. It takes a lot of abuse but seems to keep perfect time and the clock face hasn't been scratched or marred. It fit my need perfectly and the price was very reasonable.

It's a great earring holder, just what I needed, and I also put some necklaces on it to. This is a great compromise between a store display and the usual home earring holder. The shape is really fun. It is a great way to see all your earrings at once and, with so many holes, works well for those of us who are jewelry-haulics. I was a little concerned when it arrived in only a padded pouch, but it seemed to have survived shipment ok. Good value for the price.

This item was poorly constructed, damaged during shipping or both. Had the item cost half as much, I would have expected this. For an item that will cost over .00 by the time it's shipped to you, and only consist of a few wires and metal bands, the least you could expect is an appearance that it was put together carefully. The large wire scroll like frame appears racked and thus makes the metal bands all look bent. Painted finish was so thin that it was already rubbed through in several places when we received the item. It will do the job but should have cost much less for the quality.

Purchased this ring and was a little skeptic the quality wouldn't be there - but I was wrong. My jeweler even commented on how it was a great ring and his favorite design. They were able to resize it without any problems and even took out some of the gold in the middle to fit in a bigger diamond.
