My husband is an audiophile, and laughed at me when I said I wanted this CD/radio. Unlike him, I don't really care that much about sound quality. Not that it doesn't matter to me at all--it's just that HE has the big, nice sound system already, so I was happy to get something that would look nice in the living room and could play in the background while I was reading. I don't need or even like to play music very loud, so something small and pleasantly retro like this was just what I wanted.(We don't all care for 15 shelves worth of audio equipment and a gigantic subwoofer.) I was so excited!

As other reviewers have stated, it's a little difficult to tune in the radio. That was disappointing, but my CDs sounded nice enough, and the radio/CD player made me happy even to look at. It just seemed RIGHT to listed to Louis Armstrong through it, as if the beauty of the retro cathedral style cabinet made the sound more authentic. It was lovely! I was even considering getting another Crosley product for a different room, having fun paging through the catalog and anticipating what I would ask for for my birthday. I was SO happy.

... for about 7 months.

Then the right speaker blew. (Sound doesn't come out of the front speaker-looking area, but is stereo from the sides.) That it would blow surprised me, seeing as how I never, never listen to it at top volume, nowhere near. The guarantee that comes with this item is limited, and wouldn't cover the problem. Reasonable person that I am, I still wasn't too upset--I was just disappointed a bit. After all, my husband is an audiophile, as I mentioned, and he could replace the speakers for me if we could get replacements.With that happy thought, he wrote Crosley to find out if they sold replacement speakers, or if they had recommendations for replacements. He never heard back. He wrote twice, responsibly checked his spam folder just in case, but NOTHING.

So... I wrote. This is the third time they had been contacted by us. Keep in mind we were both polite: simply explained what had happened, and asked if there were recommended speakers so we could take care of the problem ourselves. I don't care about sound quality that much as I said, but it is unlistenable with all the static in the blown speaker.

Was the third time the charm? No. I got no response, either. Even if Crosley had no recommendations, it seems to me it would be polite to write back. Is this an indication of the quality of their customer service, or the quality of their product... or both? That is, after having looked for speakers ourselves, we don't seem to be able to locate any that will fit. We can find the correct wattage and so forth; however, there is not much clearance inside the case. Every speaker we looked at--and we have spent considerable time looking--seemed to be too deep to fit. So far as we can tell, the speakers are a proprietary make and substitutions that will fit can't be found elsewhere.

I loved this item while it worked. However, unless you are the type of person that can pay or 0 every few months to get a new one ( if you get it on sale), don't buy this product. The quality is apparently so poor, the manufacturer, Crosley, is embarrassed to respond even to polite inquiry. I was their perfect target customer--someone who didn't care so much about perfect sound, but who preferred instead the vintage look with just acceptable sound quality--and I am terribly unhappy with them. I'm so unhappy, I'm wasting a lovely Saturday morning writing this review.

Shame on them. I certainly won't be buying another Crosley product for a different room as I had once fondly planned, and I hope I have saved you the trouble and expense of buying ANY Crosley product.

For shame.

Similar to another reviewer earlier this year, my phone will not hang up. As soon as the phone is plugged in, a dial tone is present, which is of course good. However, placing the phone on the hook does not disconnect it from the line. Even if the phone is plugged in with the receiver on the hook, it still does not disconnect. Same behavior if the speaker phone is used. The end result of this is that no phone in the house will work as it causes the phone line to behave as if there was a phone off the hook (which there is not!). This started occurring after a few days of use. Unfortunately, I purchased the item in July, and did not install it until September (we were saving it for a new house we were moving into). Had I tried it right away, I would have likely discovered the problem and have been able to return it. I will not buy another one - very disappointed. As this is the second time this has happened to two separate people, buyers should be very cautious with this as it seems to be a recurring problem on multiple phones. I suppose Amazon could have re-sold the faulty phone from the earlier reviewer (May 2009) to me (in July 2009) - I would hope that was not the case, though.

The price is great for this product. "Personal taste" aside, to show cards in such poor condition is mind-blowing, especially in a book whose cover promises much more. I'm a very recent collector of Holiday postcards, so I've been buying every reference book I could find. "POSTMARKED YESTERYEAR" by Pamela Apkarian-Russell is a wonderful book. DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK! I saw this book in a vintage postcard store. Then I read the review on amazon. The owner of the store called my attention to it as a book not to buy. As I looked throught the book, it became apparent the best part of the book is the cover. The book pictures a lot of postcards that a reputable a dealer would put in a twenty five cent box. The cards pictured had missing corners, heavy damage and lots of ground in grime, this reveiw sounds like a commercial for laundry soap, sorry. Even the better cards shown in the book came from a different source than most of those pictured in the book, probably an internet action source because thes images were crystal clear althought somewhat smaller in size with no damage noted. The prices listed for the cards are not realistic at all. If you are interested in postcards, buy the books by Mashburn and others. They are a lot better at providing a relistic price guide and sound educational information about cards.

The title "Collector's Guide..." led me to believe that there would be informational text about dating, printing techniques, and other descriptive information about post cards. The book is entirely illustrations of post cards in various categories and their prices...fine for long-time collectors, but useless for someone seeking historical information.

This reference book for postcard collectors is entirely given over to images of the cards themselves, with no history, grading guide, or other information. That being said, it has thousands of photos of various kinds of postcards, well organized by subject (but I wish the reproduction were clearer). The prices are dated, and do not reflect the impact that Ebay, Amazon, and other online auction houses have had on postcard availability. There is not much more to say about this fan beyond what I have indicated in the title of this review. Perhaps, however, a bit of elaboration is in order.A comprehensive and easy to follow manual made the installation of this fan a breeze! The apartment in which we installed the fan was already wired for just such a device, so that was not a concern for us and I cannot address that issue except to say that the aforementioned manual does cover the topic of finding and preparing the right space for your fan. With a space already prepared for ours, it took us just under two hours to complete the actual assembly - including wiring and installation.The fan, with three speed settings and reversible air flow, has kept us cool through the torrid Florida summer and remains quiet as a whisper as it delivers its soothing zephyrs.The blades are reversible, offering a choice of basic white or faux oak.No light fixtures here if that's what you're looking for. Just an efficient fan that has proved, for this user at least, a quality product.

I purchased this fan about 3 or 4 years ago and I have only good things to say about it. I specially ordered it from Home Depot and I've been totally pleased with it. It is very quiet unlike many other fans I've seen around. One thing I can say about the Hunter fans family is that they are definitly quality fans. My mom only buys hunter and when she found out I was in the market she insisted I look at only the Hunter fans. I don't always do as mother says but this time I did and am glad I got an excellent fan with not problems at all. I would give 10 stars if theywent that far. I also like the idea that we have never had to balance the blades and no a bit of wobbling from the fan itself.

This is the fourth Hunter Low Profile ceiling fan we've purchased for our home. This 42-inch four-blade model is perfect for smaller bedrooms with eight-foot ceilings. The housing fits nicely on the ceiling where the light fixture was, it doesn't hang down too low, and it's very quiet for sleeping. Hunter suppresses the motor sound by using rubber bumpers between the mounting bracket and ceiling, soft rubber grommets for each blade, and of course a quiet motor. We're very satisfied with this product, and our first two are still quiet after three years.

But here are some things you need to know.......

1. You can't use compact florescent bulbs (CFB)...period!

2. The dusk accent lighting displays an elegant effect, but not much illumination. The lamps will brighten up when motion is detected; but otherwise, accent lighting is what you can expect.

3. The operation instructions are not user friendly. You may have to phone Heath/Zenith technical service for further explanation, once the lamps are installed.

In sum, we are most pleased with the lamps, given the price paid. They're durably constructed, attractive, and are a handsome addition to our home's main entrance, patio, and garage door lighting. My reason for not giving 5 stars: we could not use CFBs. I had not known this prior to phoning Heath/Zenith to inquire as to why the CFBs (that I installed initially) were not functioning properly in the lamps. I was informed that continued attempts to use CFBs could permanently damage the fixtures.

Antiques Roadshow Behind the Scenes is a fun and fascinating look at the no. 1 PBS weekly show, written by the program's longtime executive producer, Marsha Bemko.

Packed with quick hits called "Marsha's Musings," Bemko shares insights on the personalities and logistical demands that go into making ARS, but that's only the beginning. The book combines valuable "how to" tips for collectors with tales of wrap-party hi-jinks and appraisers' favorite recollections from 13 years of cross-country travels.

The show's history is honestly reviewed, warts and all, including the infamous "watermelon sword" episode in which two appraisers concocted a scenario to inflate the value of a Confederate weapon. The fraud resulted in a strict code of conduct for all ARS appraisers.

Hundreds of color photos feature happy (or shocked) collectors and treasures brought to the show, and profile the team in front of and behind the cameras. Bemko also recalls her favorite appraisal stories, and first on her list is Lark Mason being overcome with emotion as he views a carved marble lion from China (valued at more than 0,000).

But her fondest reminiscences are reserved for "ordinary people collecting what they love without really knowing, or caring, what the pieces may be worth." I'm a true devotee of the show who has watched it since its first host, and this is my second and favorite _Antiques Roadshow_ read. The other is their Primer, which is more about how to collect antiques and may thus have a wider appeal; this book, written by the show's executive producer, is for fans who want to know more about the show itself.

Accompanied by mostly color photos and occasional sidebars, information includes how the show first came to America (it was inspired by one in Britain), an intriguing and shocking controversy from the first season, silly things people have brought to be appraised, how the show is set up in each town it visits, and information about and advice from the show's favorite appraisers. My favorite section is the last chapter, which contains updates on what happened to some of the antiques that appeared on the show. While _Antiques Roadshow_ does occasionally have these types of updates available on their official website, I wish this section were longer.

_Antiques Roadshow_ is a vast production, especially considering that

its set is created in each town it visits! It visited my state recently, and (not having any interesting antiques) I was tempted to get in their ticket raffle just to see how it all works! I didn't, but thankfully this book explains it all, without having to stand in line for hours! If you enjoy the show from the trunk opening with the catchy theme song playing in the background to the ending with the often-humorous feedback booth, you'll enjoy finding out all about its intricate workings and the people who work so enthusiastically to bring it to us.

Through a delightfully written and totally applicable approach, Carol Prisant helps those of us green to the antiques market guage the potential value of our treasures. For such a broad field of study, Ms. Prisant takes us by the hand through a myriad of antiques, giving us a general yet highly pertinent overview of each category. She then goes into a more in depth explanation, replete with fascinating examples, of what comprises a healthy antique. She seems to provide a minor's hat to each of her readers, and brings us on a wonderful journey of exploration into so many practical and fascinating details of this arena. This was such a fulfilling read, such an inspiration to any of us who search for a more complete understanding of the world of objects around us. She primes us indeed, and serves as a masterful captain in navigating these otherwise confusing waters. If you like antiques, quirky experts (nobody can do quirky like the British!), and fabulous finds, you will love this book. You do need to have seen the British version to appreciate it though - I don't know if there is an American book equivalent to tie up with their version of the show.
