Rocking chairs from the old days were widely considered some of the finest examples of American furniture design. Innovative design houses and architects all got into the market with creations of their own, and many stretched existing forms in new directions with swooping armrests, canted surfaces and the kind of detailed edging that made any seat a throne.
These early rocking chairs were known as carpet cutters because of the damage done to carpets by repeated rocking in the same place. Rocking chairs existed in whatever style was in vogue such as Windsor, slat back, and banister. Rockers were fixed by notching the legs of the chair which were then fixed to the rockers. This was used for attaching rockers to chairs that had not been made as rockers.
The English version of the Windsor has a rounded hoop back with spindles. English Windsor rocking chairs have spindles running down their backs, legs and armrests. The spindles on the armrests are on the outer piece.
The American version has a few different types of backs. The birdcage back, the rounded or bow back, the comb back and the arrow back.
Valuable chairs are made of high-end woods like walnut; birds eye maple, cherry, cedar, quarter-sawn oak and rarer woods. Less valuable rocking chairs are made from ordinary pine and regular oak. All the parts of the chair must be made from the same wood product. The best way to determine if a rocking chair is genuine or converted is to compare the history of paint on the chair with that of the rockers.
