Antiques and collectibles can be found everywhere. With antiques, it's the warmth of old things – owning a piece of history. Considered as a prized and valuable possession, antique collectibles are a culmination of exquisite workmanship and artistic perception. Valued for their royal patronage, besides artistic excellence, antiques help in reminiscing the rich bygone era of human history.
According to Webster’s Dictionary, an antique is "a piece of furniture, tableware or the like, made at a much earlier period than the present." In reality, antiques are products that are more than 100 years old or products that are rare enough to have some value. It’s not, however, necessarily out-of-date or old-fashioned. In other words, antiques are old items that are in limited supply; the more limited it is, the more antique the item. An antique that has no appeal for one person or suggests no use is likely to be a treasure to someone else, who will gladly pay for it. Antiques have value, and that value is based on demand due to suitability and limited supply. Preferences range from such popular items as pressed glass, a particular type of pottery, clocks, lamps, coins, coin banks, bottles, souvenir spoons, and guns to oddments such as butter pats, hatpin-holders, mustache cups, cut glass knife rests, and toothpicks. Less costly now, but almost certain to increase in value during the next 20 years, are furniture made between 1850 and 1890, 19th-century brass, late 19th-century china, and cut glass.
Most people become interested in antiques for one of two reasons, in other words - there are two types of antique buyers: The ones who buy for the sheer beauty or use of a piece and the zealous collector who specializes in one particular kind of object. They either have an interest in collecting a particular type of antique purely for personal enjoyment–ceramics or pottery are the most common, or they inherit some items from a family member. It is collected or desirable because of its age, beauty, rarity, condition, utility, personal emotional connection, and/or other unique features. In contrast, there are people who literally buy antiques as an investment which they expect to increase in value. In this kind, everyone wants to be sure of one thing–that what they buy or inherit will appreciate in value. Its value is usually determined by its appeal, rarity and social acceptance.
