Marsden Hartley held his first solo exhibition in 1909 with the assistance of Alfred Stieglitz. His work was a reflection on modernist ideas, incorporating concepts of Expressionism and Cubism but also his own response. Three years later, he traveled to Europe and lived there until 1916.
Born in Lewiston, in 1877 to working-class English immigrants, Hartley was open to the impact of cultural fashions that shifted as often as his abodes. After early experiments with native landscapes, Hartley was attracted by the European avant-garde. Soon he was also painting with the bright color of Matisse and in the simplified forms of Cezanne and Picasso
Hartley led a troubled, conflicted life. He was a gay man in a society that frowned on homosexuality, an artist drawn to abstraction when such work was largely shunned by the public, a man susceptible to powerful swings of mood and capable of ever-changing artistic styles.
Hartley had a difficult childhood. His mother died when he was eight; four years later his father remarried and moved with his new wife to Ohio, leaving his lonely son with an older sister in Maine.
Hartley’s transition back to New York was a difficult one, particularly because anti-German sentiment was at a peak there, and Hartley had a very strong allegiance to all things German. In 1916, Hartley executed a series of paintings called Movements and contributed to the Forum Exhibition, which was hosted by the Anderson Gallery.
Hartley’s last years were plagued by hearing loss, failing eyesight, and poor health in general. He was quite ill and isolated the last twelve years of his life and died from terminal heart failure in Ellsworth, Maine, on September 2, 1943.
