Ando Akasuke Cloisonne Vase Wisteria Foil Sterling

Offereded for your consideration is this beautiful antique Ando Akasuke dark pigeon blood cloisonne vase with a sterling silver rim on the top and bottom which was made sometime in the very early 1900's. The foil background is hammered & engraved with a rare wisteria design. The piece is marked with the Ando cross shaped makers mark on the base and the sterling silver stamp is evident on the bottom rim that can be seen in the pictures.

The vase stands 3-7/8" tall and is 3" accross at the widest point.

Due to the very deep red pigeon blood color and highly polished finish the pictures were diffucult to get without a lot of glare and hardly do this magnificant vase justice.

There are no chips, cracks or distress marks on this piece and it is in excellent condition.

Antique Sewing Box With Vintage Remnants, Cards Etc.

For bids we have this antique sewing box made of a heavy box board. This was my grandmothers who died in 1964. This box includes needle and pin books and old spools of thread, tape measures and other notions. The box is 5.25" x 8.25" x 3". It has sustained little damage there is a slight ring on the top where a cup was placed on it at some point but it's hard to see. The Picture of Dorian Gray was Oscar Wilde's only novel, a monumental and scandalous Gothic melodrama which aroused howls of public protest when it first appeared in Philadelphia's Lippencott's Magazine during the year of 1890. In the preface, which contains Wilde's most celebrated aphorisms on art, the author challenged his critics by stating that: "There is no such thing as a moral or immoral book. Books are well written or badly written. That is all". This book has a hard cover, is gray and beige in color with gilded accent lines, it has 312 pages, a title-page in black and red, many Artist Engravings, each protected by a vellum page with excerpts typed in red, the engravings are very well-rendered and depict scenes of this unforgettable dark and brooding chiller, set in high-society late-Victorian London. Laid in is a quarter page that states, First Illustrated Edition of The "Picture of Dorian Gray", This illustrated edition was intended to be issued in 1908, the date given on the title-page; but, after the text had been printed, the Artist unfortunately fell ill, and this is the reason why the book has not appeared before the present year, 1910. THE PUBLISHER. Also a page declares, "Sole copyrite and authorized edition". A great classic story to enjoy that has also been produced on film. The spine with gilded lettering is still mostly intact and all of the pages with top edges gilded are present, very pliable, remarkably very clean and bright. Measures 10.25"H x 8"W x 1.125" thick. An extremely fragile book without any of the usual repairs or restoration.

However, (see photos) the spline cover has discoloration, wear and a 3/4" piece missing at the top. The first page after the cover has a signature of a Robert Matheson on it, whom I have no knowledge of. Two pages, the first frontispiece and it's vellum protector have come loose and are still in excellent condition, results being, no loss of content or pages (this is a common condition found with this edition). The covers show wear along the spine hinges and around the edges as would be expected for it's age. The back cover has five spots that appear as if the tips of oily fingers, long ago, may have left their imprint.
