Biography:

Millard Owen Sheets (1907 - 1989)
Born in Pomona, California, in 1907, Millard Sheets was a Californian
who specialized in depicting the West Coast urban poor in such famous
paintings as his Tenement Flats (probably the most significant painting
executed in California in the 1930s) currently in the National Museum
of American Art at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC. 
His particular use of light and color distinguished him from his East
Coast contemporaries.

Sheets attended the Los Angeles School of Art as the pupil of F.T.
Chamberlain and Clarence Hinkle.  After graduating in 1929, he had
his first solo exhibition at Dalzell Hatfield Galleries in Los
Angeles.  Sheets was the director of exhibitions at the Los
Angeles County Fair from 1931 to 1959.

Sheets served as a war artist for Life magazine, covering the
Burma-India front from 1943 to 1944.  Upon his return to
California, he executed mosaic murals throughout the 1950s and 1960s.

In addition, Sheets executed the architectural design for many
buildings, illustrated for national magazines, and handled production
design for Columbia Pictures.  During this time, he served as
director of Arts at Scripps College, in Claremont, California.

Sheets saw his work as a synthesis of Cubism and Impressionism. 
He traveled throughout Europe, Central America, Mexico, the United
States, the Pacific and the Orient, but continued to live permanently
in Gualala, California.

Curious George Takes A Job H A Rey 1947 Poor Condition Book

This is a wonderful 1947 children's book. All of the Curious George books are charming. The condition of this book is poor with rips to the cover. It is highly collectible due to it's history and popularity.

Curious George is the protagonist of a series of popular children's books by the same name, written by Hans Augusto Rey and Margret Rey. The books feature a curious brown monkey named George, who is brought from his home in Africa by "The Man with The Yellow Hat" to live with him in a big city.

When the first story, Cecily G. and the Nine Monkeys was published in France in 1939, George was named Fifi. Around the world, the adventures of Curious George have been translated in many languages, and George takes on names such as "Curioso come George" in Italy, "Peter Pedal" in Denmark, "Nysgjerrige Nils" in Norway, "Nicke Nyfiken" in Sweden, "Utelias Vili" in Finland, "おさるのジョージ" in Japan, "Choni Ha'Sakran" in Israel and "Jorge el Curioso" in Spanish speaking countries. In the United Kingdom, George was originally called "Zozo" in 1941, apparently to avoid using the name of the then King George VI for a monkey.

In each of the books, Curious George is identified in the text as a monkey, though in the illustrations he does not correspond exactly to any non-fictional species of monkey (and has more of the characteristics of an ape, especially a chimpanzee, or a gorilla, for example in his lack of a tail - though it should be noted that some species of monkeys, such as the Barbary macaque, have little or no tail).

The series was written and drawn by the team of Hans Augusto Rey and Margret Rey. The couple fled Paris in June 1940 on self-made bicycles, carrying the Curious George manuscript with them. At first only H. A. Rey was credited for the work in order to distinguish the Reys' books from the large number of children's books written by female authors. Later, Hans Rey was credited for the illustrations and Margret Rey for the writing. The Reys produced many other children's books, but the Curious George series was the most popular. The books have been re-edited continuously in the six decades since the first volume came out.
